FESTIVAL THURSDAY: QUESTION OF THE DAY

Tonight, festivalgoers get a mix of original material and previously published work. Does one excite you more than the other? Or do they both bring fresh voices to the HCTF experience?

I think having both is a plus. While it's definitely exciting to know something's a world premiere, it's still refreshing to see a published work I haven't seen or read before. It's all discovery.

What Cody said. But what bridges them both are the performances of the actors. Whether in a published piece or a premier, I'm always looking for an actor to go somewhere unexpected, make a brilliant choice, deal with something unexpected in the moment, and let the audience see aspects of the character brilliantly realized.

Its like eating a double-dip ice cream cone, with each dip having its own particular savor. At HCTF you can see an original play, and enjoy its freshness and vigor. Fifteen minutes later, with some of the remnants of the first dip dribbling down to coat the sides of the second, you sit down to enjoy the unfolding of the published work. HCTF is unique in this offering. Oh, and by the way, I'd like a scoop of butter pecan and one of blueberry in a waffle cone, please

The variety is appealing, and having to choose one form over the other is like comparing tennis shoes and dress shoes. There are very few places I get to see original works so I'm grateful that the Festival (and Cite in general) offers this. These playwrights put their heart and soul on the line for my enjoyment; that's gutsy.

At the same time, the previously published works still have a freshness because even if one has seen a particular play already, he hasn't seen it with this cast, by this director, in this venue.

I'm glad all their voices land on my ears.
